The Cost of Constantly Letting Yourself Off the Hook

| 2min Read |

Every excuse feels small until you realize what they’re costing you

How much do you actually trust yourself?

Not believe in yourself.

Not like yourself.

Trust yourself.

Because there’s a difference.

If your best friend told you they were going to do something 10 times and bailed 8 of those times, eventually you’d stop believing them.

Yet we do this to ourselves constantly.

“I’m getting up at 6 tomorrow.”

Snooze.

“I’m working out after work.”

Absolutely not.

“I’m eating better this week.”

DoorDash has entered the chat.

“I need to have that conversation.”

Maybe tomorrow.

One decision isn’t the problem.

The pattern is.

1. Your Brain Is Keeping Score

Every time you tell yourself you’re going to do something, you make a small promise.

And whether you realize it or not, what happens next matters.

Follow through enough times and you start building evidence:

I do what I say I’m going to do.

Break those promises repeatedly and you build evidence in the opposite direction.

Then we wonder why we don’t feel confident.

Maybe confidence isn’t something you need to find.

Maybe you need to earn some of it back.

2. Stop Negotiating With Yourself

Most of us already know what we need to do.

Drink more water.

Move our body.

Put the phone down.

Go to bed.

Make the call.

Have the conversation.

Start the thing we’ve been talking about starting since approximately 2007.

The problem usually isn’t information.

It’s the negotiation that happens between knowing and doing.

And if you negotiate long enough, you can talk yourself out of nearly anything.

So make fewer decisions in the moment.

Decide beforehand.

I train Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Not: “I’ll see how I feel.”

I shut my phone down at 9:00.

Not: “One more video.”

I’m having that conversation tomorrow.

Not: “When the timing feels right.”

Remove the courtroom.

There doesn’t need to be a trial every time you need to do something uncomfortable.

3. Start Small Enough That You Can't Fool Yourself

If you’ve been inconsistent lately, don’t respond by creating some massive life overhaul Monday morning.

That usually lasts until about Wednesday afternoon.

Pick 3 promises you can keep for the next 7 days.

Maybe:

  • Walk 30 minutes every day.

  • Drink 100oz of water.

  • Complete 3 workouts.

  • Read 10 pages before bed.

  • Make the call you’ve been avoiding.

  • Put your phone away during dinner.

  • Get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Nothing heroic.

Just measurable.

Then keep your word.

Because every time you follow through, you put another piece of evidence on the table.

Evidence that you’re disciplined.

Evidence that you’re capable.

Evidence that you can trust yourself again.

And eventually you stop needing motivational videos, inspirational quotes, a new planner, Mercury to leave retrograde, or Monday to magically become the perfect day to start.

You just do what you said you were going to do.

That’s a different kind of confidence.

This week, make fewer promises to yourself.

But make sure you keep them.

Take the first step forward

If one of those promises is finally taking control of your health, your training, or your nutrition, I’d be honored to help you do it.
